fun fact about languages: a linguist who was studying aboriginal languages of Australia finally managed to track down a native speaker of the Mbabaram language in the 60s for his research. they talked a bit and he started by asking for the Mbabaram word for basic nouns. They went back and forth before he asked for the word for “dog” The man replied “dog” They had a bit of a “who’s on first” moment before realizing that, by complete coincidence,  Mbabaram and English both have the exact same word for dog.

on a similar note, a traditional Ojibwe greeting is “Nanaboozhoo” so when the French first landed in southern Canada they thought that they were saying “Bonjour!” Which is fucking wild to think about. Imagine crossing the ocean and the first people you meet in months somehow speak French.

One of my university linguistic textbooks had a list of identical or near identical words in Ancient Greek and Hawaiian. They were all coincidences of course, but it was wild.

The whole point of the list was showing how there’s a finite number of sounds human can produce, and it’s possible that multiple languages will end up assembling similar sounding words meaning roughly the same thing, and that therefore assuming that similar sounding words MUST be related is hubrys.

My favourite one of these is swedish and japanese Koja and Koya (小屋). Both are pronounced basically the same (ko-ya), and both mean “hut/small hosue”, but they are not related to eachother in the slightest. Japanese koya comes from Ko- (prefix meaning “Small”) and Ya meaning “dwelling”. Swedish Koja on the other hand comes from Koj (a sleeping place on a ship), in turn from latin Cavea (enclosure/cage/cavity), probably via Dutch Kooi.

it’s easy for hobbies to turn into things we avoid because of the pressure we put on ourselves. but i promise, u have nothing to prove. if u enjoy drawing, draw!! it doesn’t have to be museum worthy. ur baking doesn’t need to be master chef worthy every time you do it. hobbies are hobbies because they make you happy and u enjoy doing them. there is no pressure for u to become a professional in everything u enjoy; enjoy it for the lack of pressure. try and let yourself participate in things without tying ur worth to the final products. if it makes you happy, anything that comes from that is worth it.

can you believe that the most human trait there is is art? we didn’t start making art because it was needed for our survival or it helped us mate or hunt…. we make art for the sake of making it and for you and other people to enjoy it. this is why I love literature and art museums or just looking through my old sketches and stories…. making art is what it means to be human I think.

there’s no rule as to how big or how small you’re allowed to dream. if you just want a small home and an orange kitchen and four cats that’s just as reasonable of a goal to work for as a big new york penthouse. and if all you really want is a simplistic career that isn’t the center of your life then that’s just as valid as dreaming of becoming a famous fashion designer or ceo. i know everyone keeps urging you to dream big, but dreams can be as simple and small as you want. they’ll always be valid. you decide how you want to live and what kind of life you want, no one else.

I feel like instead of saying “dream big” we should say “dream vividly.”

I think having a good image of what you want is more important than the scale of the dream.

i love the way women talk… every woman has their own fun expressions and mannerisms we have FUN with it men all talk the same

in actual honesty there’s tons of research on how women are linguistic innovators (one example: a study conducted about language changes in english from 1417 to 1681 found that 11 out of the 14 changes they studied were led by young girls, and the 3 remaining linguistic changes were linked to men’s greater access to education) and you can still see that all the time because women talk so distinctively and so fun like you can see young women leading linguistic change all around you
